Each room was kitted out to show the many job roles that the nurses have.
The day was a great success, thank you to all of those that helped out and to those that attended. We hope that everybody enjoyed the afternoon and found it beneficial.

'The Elderly Cat!'
Avenue Veterinary Centre are pleased to announce that we are holding an educational and fun evening event on
Tuesday 18th May 2010 at the Grange Hotel, Winterbourne from 7.30pm.
Since many conditions go unnoticed in older cats, this fun and informative evening aims to promote owner awareness and hence early diagnosis of common conditions of our feline friends. Early diagnosis allows early intervention which can extend and promote quality of life.
If you own an older cat or are interested in attending, please book your free ticket on 0117 9569 038 by 11th May.
*Everyone is welcome, but please leave your furry friends at home!*
On the 31st of May we held an Open Day. As well as visitors having the opportunity to see behind the scenes on the practice tour, there were informative displays and charity stands. We held a charity raffle with all proceeds going to the animal charities. Thank you to Cats Protection, Dogs for the Disabled, Guide Dogs, Norton Radstock College and Jo from Ace Dog Training for coming along to support us.
We hope everyone that attended enjoyed the day!

Did you know a 13 year old cat is the human equivalent of 68 years old? Or that a 10 year old dog is the equivalent to a human in their 60's ?
Older pets are more prone to certain age related diseases which, if diagnosed early before signs develop, can be managed more effectively.
During August & September we are pleased to be able to offer a 50 % discount on our Senior Health Screen for pets over 8 years of age if taken up at the time of vaccination. After seeing the vet for a physical health check and vaccination, we can offer an appointment with one of our qualified nurses who will take the necessary samples from your pet and offer any other preventative advice you may be interested in.
If you would like to take advantage of this offer during July & August, please let the receptionist know when making the appointment for your pets vaccination.

High blood pressure is as much a concern in our pets as it is in people. During June we held a competition in the reception area highlighting the health concerns due to this condition and the treatments available.
Congratulations to Mrs.Copp with Poucher who entered our competition on Blood Pressure Monitoring and won a bottle of Moet Champagne. Mrs. Copp correctly answered 3 questions on hypertension (high blood pressure).

Blood Donors Needed
- November 2007.
We are all familiar with being asked to donate blood. Pets need help too !
With advances in Veterinary Medicine we are able to offer more complex treatments, meaning we can undertake life-saving operations and procedures, which without a blood donor would not be possible. Unfortunately for pets, we do not have a National Blood Transfusion Service as there is for humans, and so we must rely on owners like you supporting this service. It is important that we have as many pets registered as possible to increase the likelihood of finding a suitable donor when it is required. By registering your pet on our Blood Donor List you will help our vets give other pets a life-saving transfusion.
There are criteria that allow us to use your pet. This ensures we do not put your own pet at any risk as well as providing healthy, useable blood.
- Be a registered client of Avenue Veterinary Centre
- Be between 1 and 8 years of age
- For dogs, weigh more than 25 kg
- Be generally healthy and receive regular veterinary preventative health care
- Have an even, calm temperament
- Have not travelled outside the UK
What would happen next ?
Once you have registered your pet on our Blood Donor list, we would contact you when a transfusion for a particular case was required. If you and your pet were available to come into the practice, we would then ask you to attend the practice immediately for the procedure. Your pet's fur on their neck would be clipped allowing us access to their vein. We would take a sample of blood to check your pet's red blood cell count was adequate. If this was the case, a volume of blood would be taken from your pet. This would then be mixed with an anti-coagulant and given to the patient. Your pet would be given intravenous fluids and a meal before returning home with you. As a thank you to you and your pet for giving blood, your pet will receive a FREE VACCINATION BOOSTER AND HEALTH CHECK from us when it was next due.
Should you wish to register or have any further questions about this service or the procedure, please do not hesitate to speak to one of our receptionists.
