Imaging

We have a Diagnostic Imaging room where we have modern radiography and ultrasound facilities. An automatic film processor enables us to produce xray films within minutes, thus enabling us to make a diagnosis promptly. Radiographs (`Xrays') have been around for over a hundred years and are a two-dimensional image of parts of the body in black, grey and white. Radiography is used to diagnose conditions affecting the skeleton - bones, joints, arthritis, tumours - and also the abdominal organs - liver, kidney, spleen, bladder, and uterus. Whilst it will show changes in heart size and lung conditions, investigations of these organs are nowadays complemented by ultrasound examination which allows movement and internal structures to be demonstrated.

Ultrasound has been used in veterinary practice for about twenty years, and it is now used routinely to diagnose pregnancy, heart conditions and abnormalities of the abdominal organs and eyes. More specialised machines can demonstrate movement of blood in the veins and arteries, and `Colour-Flow Doppler' can also show the direction of blood flow, which is particularly helpful in diagnosing heart disease. If colour-Flow Doppler is required we can arrange a visit to a referral centre.

Animals which have more complicated problems, particularly those involving the brain and spine may need an MRI scan to diagnose their condition. This can now be used in animals, and if required we are able to make an appointment at a referral centre where this investigation can be undertaken.
